Thoughts of John

What is on my mind.

Chapters 7-8 pages 42-45

1. What are some ways (good or bad) that you have seen people interpret Scripture?
2. What is the definition of interpretation? Try to answer the question yourselves before referring to the information in the appropriate chapter.
3. The author uses the example of buying a car to illustrate how we often interpret facts without being aware of it in the course of making decisions. When have you experienced the process of interpretation in your everyday life?
4. Do you read a poem the same way you read the newspaper? Explain.
5. Describe the four principles that govern how we ought to interpret the Bible. Again, try to answer the question on your own before turning back in the book. How can you commit these principles to memory?

6. When you study a book or passage of Scripture, why do you think it’s important to first understand what the author was saying to his original audience?
7. Try to name the five Cs of interpretation, in order, from memory. (Check your memory with the lists in the chapter.)
8. In your study of Philippians 2:1-11 in chapter 8, what was the hardest part about determining its meaning? Why was it difficult?
9. Now that you have gone through the process of interpretation once, what are some things you would do differently next time?
